ANDELA KENYA CAMPUS

DECEMBER 2016 - JUNE 2018

 MASS DESIGN GROUP

Nairobi, Nairobi County, Kenya
Completed
37,500 ft²

As the lead designer, I saw the project through from early client engagement to the end of construction. I worked on location throughout the design phase as the primary collaborator with the local architects and consultants. I assisted the local architect during the bidding and construction administration phases. Due to the complexities of the renovation, I also worked closely with the contractor for material procurement and design changes.

The digital revolution may have begun in Silicon Valley, but its future will be written in cities across Africa. Andela’s mission is to advance human potential by powering today’s teams and investing in tomorrow’s leaders.

Andela is solving the global technical talent shortage by building high-performing, distributed engineering teams with Africa’s top software developers. Through an extreme recruitment process, each month Andela takes on a new cohort of brilliant fellows to be trained into professional developers. This means that Andela is a rapidly growing organization in need of a flexible collaborative workspace.

MASS partnered with Andela Kenya as they outgrew their space in Kilimani, Nairobi to adapt and renovate a former girls’ boarding school off Thika Road into their new dynamic tech campus to serve 600 fellows and staff. The design focused on creating an open workspace for developers which is divided into smaller zones with the insertion of collaborative meeting spaces and “hack walls” where developers can brainstorm solutions collectively.
